# Add a tax in Roc Services

Use the Roc Services web portal to create a tax and apply the tax to a Quick Item, a catalog item, or all catalog items in a category.

To add a tax in Roc Services, complete the following steps:

1. [Create a tax](https://support.payroc.com/en-US/core-products/roc-services/web-portal/transaction-management/add-a-tax-in-roc-services.md#step-1-create-a-tax).
2. [Apply a tax](https://support.payroc.com/en-US/core-products/roc-services/web-portal/transaction-management/add-a-tax-in-roc-services.md#step-2-apply-a-tax).

## Step 1: Create a tax 

1. Log in to [https://services.rocpos.com/login](https://services.rocpos.com/login).
2. From the navigation menu, select **Settings**, and then select **Tax**.
3. Select **Edit**.
4. For each tax that you want to create, complete the following steps:
   1. Select **Add New**.
   2. In the Tax Class Name field, enter the name of the tax.
   3. In the Tax Rate (%) field, enter a percentage value for the tax.
   4. To activate the tax, select the **Status** checkbox.
5. Select **Save Changes**.

## Step 2: Apply a tax 

After you create a tax, you can apply the tax in the following ways:

### Apply a tax to a Quick Item 

1. From the navigation menu, select **Virtual Terminal**, and then select **Catalog**.
2. Select **Quick Category**.
3. Select ![Edit](https://support.payroc.com/assets/3d05c433ee93d821.png).
4. Select **Quick Item**.
5. From the **Tax** dropdown menu, select the tax that you want to apply to the Quick Item.
6. Select **Save**.

### Apply a tax to a catalog item 

1. From the navigation menu, select **Virtual Terminal**, and then select **Catalog**.
2. Select the category that contains the catalog item.
3. Select ![Edit](https://support.payroc.com/assets/3d05c433ee93d821.png).
4. Select the catalog item that you want to apply a tax to.
5. From the **Tax** dropdown menu, select the tax that you want to apply to the catalog item.
6. Select **Save**.

### Apply a tax to all items in a category 

1. From the navigation menu, select **Virtual Terminal**, and then select **Catalog**.
2. Select ![Edit](https://support.payroc.com/assets/3d05c433ee93d821.png).
3. Select the category that contains the items you want to apply a tax to.
4. From the **Tax** dropdown menu, select the tax that you want to apply to all items in the category.
5. Select **Save**.
